The Genre Tree

The first step in this project of compiling a list and taxonomic breakdown of musical genre is to simply define the larger categories.

In an attempt to provide a diverse array of viewpoints, I have linked my categories to outside pages.  These outside links provide all sorts of information from fairly simple definitions of the genre or style to historical and musicological analysis, musical examples, and further links.

I've tried to use Wikipedia as little as possible, but sometimes it's the only place to get hard-to-find information.  If you know of better sites than some I've listed here, please let me know!  ...Try not to get too lost in links!

If you find a broken link, or would like to make comments or suggestions please post at my genre forum.  I'm still looking for decent links to many genres and styles.  Suggestions are very much welcome!
